A play performed by some of the young care leavers we work with, which depicts their struggles leaving the care system, will open at the Courtyard Theatre in Hoxton on Friday October 28 at 7.30pm.
We’re producing ‘Dear Care, I’m leaving’ with the help of writer Nadège René, a care leaver herself. Our young people, all amateur performers, have developed a script for the production to be staged as part of Care Leavers Week. The play is being directed by professional actors Jennie Gruner and Tom Colley. Both are collaborative artists with The Clerkenwell Actors’ Studio and have film, television and stage experience.
Head of Youth Engagement at Drive Forward Foundation, Miranda Reilly, said: “There’s a lot of stigma around care leavers, and young people who have been in care often feel that label defines them. It’s so important they have a chance to tell their story on their own terms and share what they have experienced.
“Doing this by way of a theatre production means young people have an opportunity to contribute in a way that best suits their skills. A performance is a great way to explain exactly what it’s like to be a care leaver.”
Tickets cost £10 and are available from the Courtyard Theatre website.
